Just a reminder that this coming Friday is our Harvest Festival Service in school. If you can spare any toiletries, bottles, tinned or dried  foods, can you please send them in with children this week.

We will be supporting the church collection and donating goods to both The Friary Drop-In Centre and Dove Cottage both of which, I am sure you will agree, are very worthy causes.

Parents are warmly invited to join us for the service led by Reverend Gamble at 9.10 on Friday 10th October.

We are pleased to announce that Langar Church of England Primary School has successfully  achieved the ‘Investors in Pupils’ accreditation.

The decision was based on information and evidence from a variety of sources including the school’s self-assessment form, planning documentation, secondary sources, pre-assessment telephone interview and a full timetable of interviews involving a range of stakeholders involved in daily school life, including senior leadership team, governors, parents, teachers, non-teaching staff, pupils from each year group and pupils with positions of responsibility.

We are very proud of our pupils’ achievements and hope that this recognition will spur them on to even greater heights!

Appeal to form a new PTA committee

PTA

Sadly, we were unable to form a new committee at the January AGM, which means that all those valuable social and fund raising events organised by the PTA will no longer take place…… children are now asking when there will be another bingo night or beetle drive.

Since becoming Head Teacher of Langar Primary School in 1999, I have greatly valued the support and contributions of such an enthusiasm group of people, who, over the years have greatly enhanced the experiences of pupils, parents and staff of the school. It would be a great shame if the PTA didn’t continue under the guidance of a new Head Teacher.

As well as bringing the community together with some great social events, money raised by the PTA saves us having to frequently ask parents for contributions for everything from class trips to the cost of a piece of fruit! From a teaching perspective, the work undertaken by the committee means that myself and school staff can focus our attention on our core purpose of delivering the best learning for our children. My predecessor announced, as I walked into Headship, that it took her three weeks to book all the stalls and contributors for the 1998 Summer Fair – valuable time taken away from teaching!

Money raised over the years has enabled children to benefit from the provision of great technology (laptops, ipads, cameras etc) exciting play equipment (climbing frames on the field), brilliant new library and reading books and exciting visits to the theatre, museums, National Trust Properties etc etc. See the Powerpoint attachment.

I would personally like to ask each one of you, to consider whether you could spare an hour of two periodically to plan and run an event. I’m sure that former PTA members would endorse the fact that immense satisfaction is gained from being part of a successful event, which promotes a sense of community and generates funds to invest in quality resources for the children. Please consider offering your services and speak to myself, Trudy Sharpe or any member of the staff and PTA.

We have an enthusiastic parent willing to become chairperson, if a team of willing helpers can join her.

The school swimming team performed exceptionally well at the Toot Hill Family swimming gala. Swimming against the bigger schools in the family, the girls and boys teams each came first. However, their joint scores, combined with double points awarded for the relays placed them second overall.

What a wonderful achievement!

Well done team!

You are all invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of the PTA in the school hall, on Monday, 14th January at 7pm. Pizza and wine will be served following reports from the committee members. Time is running out for you to declare your hand and step forward to become part of the new PTA committee. We would love to hear from anyone who could spare the time to help organise our social and fund-raising events. Well honed systems are in place for the new committee to adapt as necessary. If you are inclined to ‘throw your hat into the ring’, please have a word with me or a member of the present committee before Monday to find out further details.

Bingham Library Visit

Class 2  Comments Off on Bingham Library Visit

Class 2 enjoyed their trip to the library on Friday 6th December.  May I take this opportunity again to thank the parents that accompanied us on the trip and provided transport to enable us to visit the library. Without them it would have been a long walk!!

The children had an excellent visit and one of the librarians, Carolyn, talked to the children – discussing all the different types of books we could find in the library and briefly explained how they were organised. She also read them two books.

We found out how to take books out – that now we use a self service system rather than the librarians stamping the books.  The children were amazed to discover that you can have up to 24 books for 3 weeks – you can renew in person, by phone and online! (Children cannot be fined for returning books late!)

Children who had requested them were given library cards to start using as soon as they like and it is our hope that you will visit the library with your child over the Christmas holiday to see the wealth of books Bingham library has to offer – it is one of the best I have seen!  The librarians are happy to assist in choosing books and finding particular authors or topics.  There are also computers the children can use with a password that the librarians will give you when you visit.

The other reason to go and visit is of course to see your child’s work on display in our Advent Santa.  The children were very excited to see their work up and of course want to go and see the Santa when their window or box has been opened (or even to open it on their day!  The library is open Mondays 9-1, Tues, Thurs and Fri 9-7, Wednesday 9-12 and Saturday 9-4. Please go and visit it! I will be taking it down in the first week of January.

We hope your child enjoyed the visit and that you enjoy exploring the library facilities when you are next there (there is now a coffee machine available in the library too!!!).

Regards

Mrs Wright and Mrs George
