Prior to being ordained as a part-time, unpaid minister, in 2002 I was a self-employed Chartered Accountant in a practice which I started in 1991. As well as being a governor, I take collective worship in school regularly and also do “story time” in the pre-school every Monday morning.

 Richard Swallow – Parent Governor

I was appointed as a Parent Governor following the result of a ballot (parent governors are voted for by parents of the school’s children). I have lived in Colston Bassett for the last 6 years and have one daughter at the school and another who we hope will be joining the school in a few years’ time.

I have a Masters degree in Engineering, Economics and Management from Oxford University. I have had a variety of engineering management roles since, which have been focused primarily on problem solving in the world of manufacturing. For the last 12 years I have run my own company which provides online education and training material for adults working in a variety of manufacturing industries.

I see the current role of a parent governor at Langar as one of helping the leadership team to find the right strategic steps for a small primary school in these uncertain times, whilst ensuring they continue to maintain their high standards and drive for improvement in the areas they identify as needing extra focus.

I try to maintain a presence at the school gate at pick up and drop off as much as I can and hope therefore I am available to listen to parents’ views and opinions. Since becoming a governor, I have come to understand the role more and to recognise that our role is not to funnel these views to the governing body but to take account of parents’ views and opinions as I contribute to governors’ decisions.
